Un corridor pour éléphants, c’est l’idée géniale d’une fondation, la Mount Kenya Wildlife Trust. Quant aux pachydermes qui circulent sur cette auto- route de l’harmonie au coeur d’une réserve de biosphère, ils ont pour anges gardiens des chevaux. Des équidés bien décidés à préserver une espèce que l’on chasse encore et toujours pour son ivoire. Assurément, «Kenya, Harmony and Ivory», documentaire animalier de 52 ’, est un condensé d’humanité où s’enchevêtrent l’entraide des hommes envers les animaux et l’entraide des animaux entre eux. Une très belle leçon de coexistence pacifique qui fait un bien fou à l’humanité, à la biodiversité et à l’avenir de la planète. Le film se focalise donc sur cette population libre de pachydermes du Mont Kenya, la deuxième plus grande population libre après celle de la réserve du Tsavo, avec plus de 6000 individus en perpétuels mouvements sur un espace de 7 000 Km2, un terrain de jeu qui se trouve être très peuplé et donc particulièrement cultivé ! Un problème de cohabitation insoluble ? Beaucoup l’ont cru, tellement les incidents étaient fréquents aux passages réguliers des éléphants, mais c’était sans compter sur une idée folle qui a germé dans la tête d’une femme, Susie Weeks, il y a une douzaine d’années : créer un corridor de 14km de long, une autoroute pour pachydermes avec, en prime, un passage souterrain permettant le franchissement d’un axe routier important. Et cela fonctionne… Une incroyable réussite qui a réconcilié les hommes et les éléphants !
The elephant corridor is the brainchild of the Mount Kenya Wildlife Trust. A harmonious highway at the heart of the biosphere reserve, the pachyderms using it are being protected by some curious guardian angels; horses, determined to conserve a species that is still being hunting for its ivory today. “Kenya, Harmony and Ivory”, a 52’ animal documentary, is a distillation of humanity, in which humans helping animals, and animals helping one another, are all part of the same story. It’s a wonderful lesson in peaceful co-existence, which is doing mankind, biodiversity and the future of the planet an incredible amount of good. Our documentary, “Kenya, Harmony and Ivory” focuses on the wild elephants of Mount Kenya, the second largest population in the world after those of the Tsavo Reserve, with more than 6000 individuals in constant movement over an area of 7000 Km2, a playground that also happens to be densely populated and therefore particularly cultivated! An insoluble coexistence problem? So many people thought, given the frequency of incidents during the regular elephant migrations. But that was before the conception of a crazy idea 12 years ago: the creation of a 14km long corridor, a highway for pachyderms, with the added bonus of an underpass beneath a major road. And it’s working! The project has been a huge success, reconciling humans and elephants!
