Depuis toujours, la force du vent est autant source de fantasmes que de désolations. Si l’on sait désormais décrire avec précision les principes physiques qui la régissent, on a du mal à exploiter pleinement son potentiel, et plus encore à se prémunir de ses excès. Pourtant, la nature quant à elle, a su s’adapter. Les insectes, les oiseaux et bien évidemment les végétaux ont trouvé une véritable harmonie avec le vent, dont les scientifiques s’attèlent à observer les mécanismes. Le défi des chercheurs : étudier un phénomène totalement invisible et enfin maîtriser cette énergie colossale.
Wind has always been a source of fear and fascination for humans. At times destructive, it is also crucial to the advancement of life on earth…pollinating plants and dispersing species, propelling vessels and powering machines. Today, we can describe the physical principles behind this mighty resource, but still haven’t learned how to fully exploit it. So researchers have turned to Mother Nature for inspiration, studying how plants, insects and birds adapt to it. Their challenge now is to invent the technology that can transform this invisible force into an infinite source of energy.
